BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Think beyond
the puppy stage

A retriever will become part of your everyday life. Consider the time, space and attention you can offer, from early training to daily walks and quiet evenings at home.

1. MEET THE MOTHER
2. ASK ABOUT HEALTH
3. SEE WHERE THEY ARE RAISED
You should always be able to meet the mother with her puppies, in the environment where they are raised. This gives you an understanding of her temperament.
Responsible breeders health test their dogs for key conditions. You should be able to see the dogs’ hip and elbow scores, eye-test results and relevant DNA-test results.
Puppies should be raised in a clean, safe and stimulating home environment, not in kennels or left unattended in their own buildings.

4. TEMPERAMENT BEFORE COLOUR
5. ASK ABOUT ONGOING SUPPORT
6. BE PREPARED YOURSELF

A retriever is more than just a colour and breed. A well-bred, well-socialised retriever will be a loving companion whatever their colour. Be sure to see the temperament of the puppies and their mother, especially if you have children.
A good breeder will be there for you throughout your retriever's life, offering advice and support whenever you may need it. This shows a breeder’s genuine commitment to their dogs and to your puppy.
Bringing a puppy home is a long-term commitment. Think about the time, training, exercise and costs involved. Make sure a retriever fits with your lifestyle now and in your future.

TRUST HOW IT FEELS
Beyond health tests, paperwork and questions, trust your instincts. A responsible breeder will be open, honest and genuinely interested in finding the right homes for their puppies.
There should never be pressure to make a quick decision. The right puppy from the right home, is always worth the wait.
