Working vs show Golden Retrievers can differ in build, energy levels, coat and breeding lines. Working Golden Retrievers are often leaner, more athletic and more driven. They usually enjoy plenty of exercise, training and retrieving. Darker golden and fox red coats are commonly seen in working lines.

Show Golden Retrievers are often broader, more heavily built and have a fuller coat with more feathering. Pale gold and cream coats are commonly associated with show lines.

That said, colour alone does not decide whether a dog is working or show bred. A fox red dog is not automatically from a working line, and a cream dog is not automatically show line — the pedigree and breeding behind the dog are what really matter.

At Westhouse Retrievers, we believe families should look beyond colour and consider temperament, health testing, breeding lines and lifestyle suitability when choosing a Golden Retriever.

Both types can make wonderful family dogs — the important thing is finding the right match for your home and way of life.
